Part of the purpose of this website was to do an experiment - I wanted to see if it was possible to make a successful website that ranks highly in Google, whilst embedding almost all of the text content into images. Virtually everything you see on screen is a graphic that has been created on the server and is sent to you as either a GIF or a JPEG.
The benefit of this is that it allows me to choose whatever font I desire and use it everywhere - not just on buttons or menu items, but literally every piece of text on the screen. I wanted to know if I could do this and still have enough keywords in the page to actually get seen in search results. This isn't the kind of experimentation you normally get to do in a business environment, so I chose to try it on my personal website.
So far the results look promising - I do still have some text content in the page and pretty much all of the images have relevant alt attributes. I'm making extensive use of modern Javascript+AJAX techniques, but throughout the project the goal has always been to do it in a way that won't damage search rankings.
It's really too early to tell whether this approach is hindering my performance on search result pages - so far search performance has exceeded expectations and I'm gradually moving up the first page of results for my most important keyword 'Cuckmere Haven' - as I write this my site's hovering between position 5 and 6.
