These are my first serious attempts at HDR photography - not all the photos are HDR, and in some cases I&#39;ve left the non-HDR versions in for comparison. I got up early and queued to get tickets the day they were released. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[Burning the Clocks acts as an antidote to the excesses of a commercial Christmas - people gather together to make paper and willow lanterns to carry through their city and burn on the beach as a token for the end of the year. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[My son Alfie Thomas Simkin was born August 25th 2011 at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. He weighed 5lb 6oz - he&#39;s not premature, but he is tiny! This album was taken over his first week in the big wide world. <title>Brighton Gay Pride 2011</title>

<summary type="html" ><![CDATA[Gay pride in Brighton is a big event. Probably the city&#39;s biggest regular outdoor event in fact. This year was the first year that they&#39;ve tried charging for the main event in Preston Park. Of course, the parade is free. This year&#39;s theme was &quot;Out of this world&quot;. These photos are of what I saw of Pride as someone who&#39;s not willing to pay the £12 entrance fee for the park(which I think is too high). During the chilli festival Barrie and I sampled some rather hot chillies, I took a few shots of Barrie&#39;s reactions. After that I went camping in Stanmer Park with Lisa, which apparently you&#39;re not supposed to do, we only got told that after a couple of nights there when we planned to leave anyway. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[I was the only person foolhardy enough to have driven to Cuckmere Haven in the snow, although I did encounter one other person who&#39;d cycled. It was snowing heavily the entire time and this did present some problems keeping the camera dry and the lens clear (not to mention avoiding hypothermia - up at Hill Barn it was pretty bleak). <title>Rainbows over the Cuckmere Valley</title>

<summary type="html" ><![CDATA[When I got out of my car at the Golden Galleon public house on the West side of the Cuckmere Valley and began walking North along the River Cuckmere; I was beginning to think I&#39;d picked the wrong place to park because the entire Western side of the Cuckmere Valley was shrouded in shadow. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[This time I decided to park at the Golden Galleon public house and walk North along the River Cuckmere. So far I haven&#39;t really explored North of the A259 and this isn&#39;t a walk I&#39;d done before. The weather wasn&#39;t ideal and I only got a total of about 5 minutes of good light, however I still managed to get some good pictures. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[This time I decided to photograph dusk from Birling Gap. I parked up and walked east towards Belle Toute lighthouse. You can see autumn is coming; lots of reds and browns. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[The last few weeks I&#39;ve been so obsessed with getting my perfect picture of the coastguard cottages that I forgot to photograph the eastern side of the River Cuckmere. Today I decided to set that right - I parked at the visitor centre and walked along the tourist path to photograph sunset from the base of Haven Brow. I&#39;m really pleased with these images. <title>Haven Brow and Cuckmere Haven at Dusk</title>

<summary type="html" ><![CDATA[Another attempt at getting my elusive perfect shot of the coastguard cottages; I parked up at Hill Barn and wandered down the track to the coastguard cottages. Almost all the elements of my perfect shot were there - the warm glow of the setting sun, the harsh direct sunlight and the blue sky and the tide was in. The clouds still weren&#39;t perfect though; I have a very specific image in my head of how I want my &#39;perfect&#39; picture of the coastguard cottages to look and I didn&#39;t quite manage it this time around. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[It&#39;s a clear evening when I arrive at Hill Barn and start my walk along to the coastguard cottages. The sun hangs low in the sky and casts long shadows across the ground. In some shots I struggled not to get my own shadow in the frame on some of the shots. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[On the 15th February 2003 close to 2 million people took to the streets of London to voice their opposition to the invasion of Iraq. That&#39;s approximately 1 in every 50 people in England felt strongly enough to go to London and march. I was one of them. At the time there was a feeling that if this many people said no, the government might actually listen. Did they listen? Did they fuck!

<summary type="html" ><![CDATA[When I got in my car to drive to Cuckmere Haven the sky was blue and there was barely a cloud to be seen. I was hoping to get the shot I&#39;ve been trying to get for ages - the coastguard cottages bathed in the warm glow of a setting sun. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[Arrived at Cuckmere Haven in time for sunrise again - this time I parked in the car park at the Golden Galleon public house (primarily because the main Cuckmere Haven car park is closed at that time of the morning). <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[Whilst photographing the sunset at Cuckmere Haven I stumbled across an area of a few square meters where hundreds of Six-Spot Burnet Moths (Zygaena filipendulae) had chosen to make their chrysalises - they were literally everywhere I looked. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[This time I parked up at Hill Barn on Seaford Head and walked down towards Hope Gap and the coastguard cottages. Waited for tide to go out and took some shots of the rock pools and the beach below Short Cliff. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[Lots of flower photographs from Great Tew, Chipping Norton. Had a nice drive out there from Oxford and a tasty lunch in the Falkland Arms and a little walk into the estate. There really were beautiful flowers everywhere and I&#39;d have taken loads more photos if I had time. <summary type="html" ><![CDATA[This year the Environment Agency decided that they&#39;re going to stop maintaining flood defences at Cuckmere Haven. Cuckmere Haven is one of my favourite spots for outstanding natural beauty close to home in Brighton. Lisa and I recklessly decided to drive to the top of Ditchling Beacon, then along the B2116 to Devil&#39;s Dyke and back down to Brighton.
